Can is use this program before defragging XP system?   Had it on my 2000, but wasn't sure about XP.

It doesn't say you can't but there is no need to close programs when you defrag your hard disk.

No, but if a program writes data to a volume while it is being fragmented, the defragger will take much longer to finish.

About two hours ago I was defragging with Youtube open.
All though you are right, it doesn't make a dramatic difference.

Some programs will have more effect than others. The amount of data written and how often the write operations take place are the key factors. Web browsers saving cookies will slow down a defrag of the system volume a bit. I found that disabling Speedfan made defrags of c:\ a lot quicker, it was updating a temperature log file every 5 minutes.

Yeah, and playing games/using resource intensive programs while running a Defrag makes them both as slow as a snail.

In general, closing all open windows, and leaving computer alone, should be sufficient to perform defrag. Start it before you go to bed.
