Internet connection issue (Network cable unplugged/enabled)
    « on: August 21, 2008, 08:53:29 PM »
I went through your great virus folks here just to clear up if it was one or not and i was told it all seems clean. So here is the  dilemma.

"My tech folks have came out and deemed my cable(ish) internet (it is wirelessly transmitted from their tower to my roof and then via cord transfered to what they dubed a modem [teeeeeny thing] that then plugs into my computer) connection is...well fine. Its my computer ( my barely a month old HP pavillion dv9000) that is causing the connection to flicker at a consistent rate from "enabled" to "Network Cable Unplugged" .  I called HP and they  told me that is a virus that is doing this. Ahem. One I picked up from facebook and or myspace that automatically installs itself via java not necessarily from even someones page i visited but possibly a page ten times removed due to both sites being networking sites.  Idk. And at this point dont care I just want the darn thing fixed. I can pick up wireless connections with out an issue and will be going probably tommorow to pick up a wireless router, but i still would like to know what the drama is with my computer!"

since they ruled out a virus here, any ideas? Ive disabled and then enabled the connection again and nada. When unplugged it properly just says network cable unplugged. So what the hey? Im trying to avoid sending it in to hp which would take at least 3 weeks all together.

It could be a bad cable or bad fitting on the cable.  Make sure you wireless is disabled when your on cable and make sure cable is disabled when your using wireless. Doesn't sound like a Virus to me.

But wouldn't a bad cable or fitting on the cable stop another computer form being able to use it? Another used it just fine. Also Wireless was disabled when i was trying to use the cable but it still was flickering.

        She's using Vista SP1.

And I didn't realize that you said that another computer was tested on the same modem and cable, Hanna.  I guess I'll stop blaming them.  Heh.  That does confuse me a bit, though.  I'm unfamiliar with Vista, so I don't know if it could be contributing to the problem or not.  What do you think, Broni?  You certainly know a heck of a lot more about Vista than I do.

I wonder if Vista Firewall might be configured improperly.  Also...as your computer starts booting up, repeatedly hit the F8 key to get to the boot menu and select Safe Mode With Networking.  Are you still able to connect to the internet?  If so, how does it act?

Ok So yesterday bought the  wireless router, and to configure it I have to plug my machine into it via the same loopy port thats been doing this to me...and you know what? It connected fine. absofickenlutley fine. But of course when i tried my isp's cord it still wont connect to it and gives me the same bs. So it has to be my isp's cord they gave me fritzing... but only when plugged into my computer. Yet that same cord plugged into and worked with someone elses who had xp....

I dont know but Im giving them a call monday to tell em. What a headache!

Thanks for trying to wrap your brains around this one!

No problem, Hanna.  If you manage to find out anything from your ISP, be sure to let us know.
