Hi Broni, I understand what you are saying.
I thought the situation is a little bit less complicated than unexplainable.

Alright, now I have a clean XP on my system, and of course all the previous issues are all gone.
However, now I'm having another big headache - the onboard audio is not functioning. I've reinstalled all the hardware driver, but the onboard Realteck audio doesn't not even appear in my Device Manager. Instead, there is an mysterious PCI device detected which I have no idea what it is and couldn't find any driver from any of the driver CD I have in hand. This is driving me nut. I suspect the undetected onboard audio and the mysterious PCI device is the same issue.

In Device Manager, are there any Yellow Exclamation or Question Marks?

If so, you need to find the appropriate drivers for them (you can do this by right clicking them)

It will be on the driver CD that shipped with the motherboard...if you do not have this CD DLoad the complete MBoard driver set from the board manuf's site.

The Yellow Exclamation is on the mysterious PCI device, and I have search for driver on all the CDs I have i.e. the motherboard CD, the display card CD, and the PCI TV card CD.
It could not find the driver needed.

As for the audio, I've installed the driver from the motherboard CD, restarted after the installation, and nothing shows up in the Device Manager. When trying to play sound in media player, I got the message "no audio hardware available". Nothing in devide manager is associated with Realtek.

      Most likely.
What is the brand, and model of your computer?

If the motherboard drivers are not installed first and correctly this is exactly what will happen...

Hi Broni, I built the system myself.

        Here is what I have:

        Intel Pentium 4 630, 3151 MHz (15 x 210)
        Asus P5LD2  (3 PCI, 3 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Gigabit LAN)
        Intel Lakeport-G i945G
        3072 MB  (DDR2 SDRAM)
        NVIDIA GeForce 6500  (256 MB)
        WDC WD1200JS-55MHB0  (111 GB, IDE)
        HDT722525DLA380  (250 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA-II)
        ASUS DRW-1608P2S
Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

I suspect the onboard audio is dead?
Before I do anything to my faulty system, it was working.
Then I did a repair installation, and after that, the audio did not work. It appeared in the Device Manager but the status is "the device cannot start".
Then I did the clean installation, and now it doesn't even show up in the Device Manager.
Plus, a mysterious PCI device under the "Other Devices" category.

If the motherboard drivers are not installed first and correctly this is exactly what will happen...
That was the very first thing I did (and always do).
Soon after the Windows installation completed and restarted, the first thing I did was installing all the drivers and motherboard utilities from the motherboard CD.

I've done this a few times in the past and this is the first time I'm having this issue.

There is a good chance, that PCI "other device" is your on-board sound.
Go here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us, enter your mobo model (there are several flavors of P5LD2 models), download, and install mobo drivers, as patio said.

I didn't see your last post, but you can try Asus page download, anyway.

          Also...
          Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
See what is listed under audio adapter. Post it back here.

Hi Broni, I've downloaded and installed the latest audio driver from the Asus site, guess what, it works now.
However, I noticed something which suggests that it was not the original driver's fault.
When I installed the driver, the Startup Monitor pops up and prompts for startup changes, with a long list of entries. When I click on the "OK" button, one of the entry in the list was unchecked, as it is at the same row with the "OK" button.
So, I guess that was the reason why it didn't work.
Anyway, I'm glad that it works now.
Thanks for all your help, and Patio too.

P/S: My list of components listed in the earlier post was picked from Everest's report.

It's either that, or Asus site gave you better, newer driver.
In any case, I'm glad, you're back in business :)

The driver on the CD works all the while, so it should work anyway. I was just not aware of the Startup Monitor issue.
Yea...getting my sound back is a big relief. Have not listen to any music in the past 48 hours and that was terrible ^_^

              Thanks again.
