DNS, sorta cant get out to internet
    « on: August 08, 2008, 10:46:05 AM »
    Okeay, here we go.
Got a truck load of viruses,spy/malware the other day. I've spent hours upon hours trying to get it all cleaned up and working again. Here are a few of the problems that I had. Explorer.exe would not load. Once I got that fixed, each icon that I clicked on would get deleted. C: and D: were gone from the My Compter or anyother drive listing application, Spyware/malware out the back side, to many to list here.
BUT here is my current problem, web browsing.
I can ping and tracert out, my AV (symantec) can update, all my other (3) systems can browse but not this one. Yes, I know, you'r thinking, if you can't browse then how is he posting this. I installed Win XP Pro in addition to my original OS Win XP Home. As you can see, the Pro is working fine, but the Home is not.

    Problems:
Getting DNS error when trying to browse and multiple browser windows popup afterwards... dns entry is same ip as my router

Troubleshooting already completed so as not to waste time:
( I do know more than a little about computers, just not this problem)

    -sfc /scannow  - no problems
-did the ipconfig /flushdns then /registerdns - still same problems
-Contacted ISP, tried to input dns ip manually, did nothing, didn't even change the default for my home network (192.168.1.1).
-installed new OS (XP Pro) works fine. but it also shows the same IP's. So the IP might not be the problem as I am able to browse with this OS and same DNS IP. So that is what got me here.
It works (ip) on one OS but not the other, where/what is the problem?

thanks for any help that any1 can provide.

I'm not really much of a networking person, so I can't give a lot of suggestions in regards to that.  But I can see if you have anymore infections lying around that could be causing trouble.  Read this and post back with the three requested logs:

I'll do what I can for you and if the problem still persists, I'll point you in the right direction so you can hopefully get the proper help.

Sorry took so long getting back with the info. R/L and all that, but here they are, I've combined the logs, hope I got all of them.
      Waiting for a reply.

That's not all of the requested logs. HijackThis is missing.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

        O2 - BHO: (no name) - {88067909-efd9-48bd-a058-3e478ab21c4a} - blank (file missing)
        O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
        O20 - Winlogon Notify: igfapi - igfapi.dll (file missing)
        O20 - Winlogon Notify: ljJYPfEV - ljJYPfEV.dll (file missing)
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)

Important: Close all open windows except for HijackThis and then click Fix checked.

        Once completed, exit HijackThis.

        You have Viewpoint installed.

Viewpoint Media Player/Manager/Toolbar is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

More information: It is suggested to remove the program now.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
        • Viewpoint
        • Viewpoint Manager
        • Viewpoint Media Player
        • Viewpoint Toolbar

Your Java is out of date.

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system.

First install the new Sun Java Runtime Environment

Be sure to close all browser windows before beginning the install.

        Remove the old version(s)

        • Go to add/remove programs and uninstall all old versions.
        • Be sure not to remove the new version that was just installed.
        • Download JavaRa.zip and unzip the file to your Desktop.
        • Open JavaRA.exe and choose Remove Older Versions
        • Once complete exit JavaRA and delete the program.
        • Run CCleaner.
        .

        How is everything now?

Well, I've gotten all the above done and still have the same problem, minus all the viruses and malware. I still cannot get out on the internet. Again, my Symantec can do live updates, I can ping any and all www's, but I cannot browse with either  browser and I cannot access World of Warcraft servers.
I have done all I can think of, any other ideas?

Have you tried turning off your firewall and antivirus to see if one may be blocking the connection?

So sorry for the delay on this..... :-\

I checked the firewall program and sure enough the settings were all jacked up. Took me the better part of the day to get things back the way that I wanted them.
Thanks for all the help! I know that I would still be in bad shape without your help.
            THANKS!
