IMHO, Eset/NOD32 offers the best protection available, and also uses less resources than most other competing programs.
However, there are free alternatives, such as Avast, AVG, and Antivir, which I also highly recommend.
As for firewalls, I've heard good things about Comodo and Online Armour, both of which are also free.
My own advice would be to keep the security suite you have until the subscription runs out, and then decide whether or not to pay for it and keep going, or switch to some different programs.

I have used AVG Free Edition for years and have never been a victim of viruses, also Zonealarm makes a great Firewall. The combination will keep you safe. The other benefit is that they are very small programs so space is not an issue.

Current AVG version is NOT recommended.

            Hi,

i recommend you the (best) free of charge Comodo Firewall Pro as you can see in this impressive test results:

Only a closed bug is a good bug.
