Change of ISP - what happens to email?
    « on: September 12, 2008, 09:48:29 AM »
My ISP is AOL and I intend to change.

I presume that means a change of email address and program and I'm not sure what happens to my present saved (on AOL) email.

Can I save it somehow to disk?

Any other tips or info on changing ISP would be appreciated.

I should perhaps have mentioned that I'm in the UK.

If you change your ISP, and the mail is stored with them, then you would lose it.
Not being an AOL customer I don't know if it's possible to save the messages to disk, but I would say it should be possible somehow.
Out of interest, who are you switching to?

Calum - thanks for reply.  I haven't decided yet who I'll change to.  I'm leaving AOL because of continuing connectivity problems and their poor customer service.

First enquiries favour a smaller co.: Fast Co. - slightly more expensive than AOL, but very good reports on a comparison website (ISP Review).  BT also looked at, but their 18 month contract put me off, also I'm a bit wary of the big companies.

Re the emails - I think I'll just make copies of the few that I really want to save.

You can set email forwarding service: http://www.emailaddresses.com/email_forward.htm, which will give you time to inform everyone about your email address change.

silkie, I wasn't aware of Fast Co, but they look OK.
You may want to look at Tiscali (my personal choice, very cheap with phone thrown in) and Bethere (very fast and cheap, but not available everywhere).
Just some thoughts, anyhow, and I agree about AOl, their customer support is the worst ever.
