Disk Read Error

I turned my computer on and it failed to boot,displaying the error message: Disk read error on the screen. How do I solve this problem.

    Do you have a floppy drive (with a disc still in it)?

    Have you changed anything recently - boot order in the BIOS? Added a new drive? Deleted system files?
    Is this a laptop or desktop?
    What OS does the system use?
