HELP!! With pull down menus on forms to fill out on IE7!!
    « on: September 17, 2008, 05:34:30 PM »
I have a hp that was built in 2002. I started having problems with my internet and Norton was coming up with a internal error 1005,1 and 1005,3. I have been on line chat with the Norton technicians for 3 daysand they are telling me they think I have a virus and wants an additional 99 dollars to rid my computer of the virus. But they are not sure that is what the problem is. They were in my computer doing a bunch of things and now when I go to the internet and have to fill in my address for something and it asks me what state. I pull down the arrow and everything is blank. When I tried to sign up for this website computer hope asked me what computer I have and the submenu pull down menu is blank. My history is okay when I am typing in the http box. I can pull down where I have been. Its just in the blank forms that I am having problems...Any Ideas?? It is driving me crazy to have to go through all the countries to get to the US when ordering something on line. I have ran virus scans, installed and reinstalled Norton. All scans say I have no virus.

Just a thought - in your internet options - do you have scripting turned off?

Many dropdowns require interpreting of JScript - so it needs to be allowed and turned on.
Ain't technology great - until it goes wrong!

thanks for the thought but the script is enabled....I tried upgrading to the I8 beta thinking that would help but same thing. I just ran the spybot scan and fixed what was coming up there and still blank pull downs but only on forms. My address bar and favorites pull down menus are fine.

What Windows version? Still with IE8 beta?

Verify your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
      Update, if necessary.
Uninstall all previous Java versions, through Add\Remove.

Thanks so much for your tip, I was so excited to think it might just work!!

windows xp version 5.1 service pack 2. Yes still on ie8 beta but the problem was happening before ie8.

I tried the java uninstall and install but to know avail.  ??? could this have anything to do with activex. I was noticing a popup with a form to fill out titled EMetrex. Any thoughts?

First of all, installing beta program won't fix any issues with previous, final version of the program.
I'd uninstall IE8 beta. It should revert IE to IE7. Then, I'd uninstall IE7, go back to IE6, and see, if you still have a problem.

Okay your my hero....here what happened. I uninstalled 7-- pull downs now work. I reinstalled 7 ---pull downs stop working, again. Do you have any idea what it is that 7 doesnt like about my computer? For now IR 6 it is because I can't keep running to get my laptop to pull the same page up so I can see the pulldowns. Although my son thinks its funny watching me run back and forth. Thanks for all your help...I LOVE THIS SITE!!

Now the problem is that I cant update with windows update because it needs ie 7 and wont let me stay on ie6. I cant get on my gmail account because it sends an error telling me to update with high priotity updates which include the service pack 2 and 3 which has ie7 included....I have email microsoft this morning to see what may be the problem with my computer and ie 7...I will let you know what they said...but until then maybe someone knows what it is that ie7 doesnt like about my computer.

              I'm glad, we're getting somewhere.
Are you saying, that you don't have SP2 installed? That's not good.
              However, before you do anything...

              Download HijackThis:
              http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
              Click on Download HijackThis Installer
              Post HijackTHis log.

Sorry so long between post, but had one of those family emergencies that take over time for fixing the computer...Here is the logfile from what you asked me to download and run...Not sure what to do with all this information. The logfile told me to ask knowledable folks which I kind of thought that was a sign it was way over my head. Thanks so much for you help and I am waiting anxiously to see what all this means.

Nothing malicious there, but you're running two security programs: Windows OneCare Live, and Norton. This is not good. It may be part of your problem.
One of them has to go.
Before you do anything, let me know, which one you want to get rid of.

OK. Neither of those programs are good. I'd say, they're horrible.
Follow instruction below to the letter.
                  1. Download one of these:
                  - Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html
                  - Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
                  DO NOT install anything yet.
                  2. Download Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
                  DO NOT run it, yet.
                  3. Physically disconnect from the internet.
                  4. Run Norton Removal Tool.
                  5. Uninstall Windows OneCare Live, through Add\Remove
                  6. Install Avira/Avast (whichever you downloaded).
                  7. Turn Windows firewall on:
Go Start>Control Panel. Double click on the Security Center icon. Click on the Windows Firewall icon beneath the status updates. Click On, then OK.
                  8. Reconnect to the internet.
                  9. Post new HJT log.
