    when i put in any discs into my laptop, it simply wont recognize them. how do i establish what is wrong? and whta can i do ?

      You should read the linked page and supply the information requested.  You haven't even indicated which operating system you are using e.g. Windows 3.1, Windows 98, Windows XP, Vista.  You may have a hardware or software problem which could be specific to the type of laptop or the operating system in use.

        apologies. i dnt kno too much about it sorry.
        got a toshiba laptop, dont know model. i use windows vista basic. use avg free and that has never shown anything particularly dangerous. said somewhere that i should check device manager and that also said ti was fine. appreciate help, sorry about the lack of knowledge

          i try to play cds, dvds, games and it just says that ther is no disc in it

          Is this a removable CD unit ? ?
          Most are in laptops...if so power down hit the release button and firmly re-seat it and power back up.
