    56K modem no respond
    « on: January 19, 2009, 12:31:00 PM »
First I should mention i was  flashing my bios, I now cannot access my modem it states Location is Bus 0, Device 11, Funtion 0  This device cannot find enough resourses that it can use. (code 12)  If  you want to use diable other devices on this system.
What othert device? If  this is a modem failure shouldn't it say device failure.  Also now when turning off or quiting windows XP it turns off windows, but screen says you can turn of computer safely now and computer keeps on running, switch does not turn it off only way is to pull cord out of wall, is there a way to fix?

It may be that when you upgraded you bios the default IRQ addresses and memory management settings causing a conflict.

      if you run device manager
start - control panel - system and maintenance - system - device manager then find the modem in the list bring up the properties for the modem you MAY be able to change the resources memory and IRQ settings find one the doesent conflict...

some modems wont give you this option. but if it does that should fix the problem.
      Hope all goes well.

I didn't think flashing the bios with software should hurt anything unless there is more to motherboard that can be changed.  I tried changing conflict of interest but won't give you that option and  uninstalled and reinstalled driver, enabled plug and play in setupset  and even reinstalled windows still get code 12 and windows XP will not turn computer off you always have turn it off with the power button. Could just have a bad motherboard.

          run through the guide here:

          http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html

and then you can post the logs in a new topic at the viruses and spyware program.

As for AV programs, Avira and Nod32 are good candidates- there are some others but their names escape me. You don't need a paid Anti-virus program, though.

You're missing the point...an incorrect BIOS flash can ruin a MBoard.
With some boards you can have a service center install a new EEPROM chip instead of buying a whole new board.
Whether you can do this with your board or not can be answered by them...

I got my computer to power down by enabling tha APM in power management., I think my bios should be ok. I took out my 56k modem and installed in different machine and I get code 28 instead of code 12 this must mean that the modem is failing as windows xp should install a generic modem as it did in the machine where I got a code 12 as this was one of those cheap modems from china with no software support.  I had another modem laying on the shelf that someone gave me and when you install into pci socket computer will turn on and beep and go no further this must mean if you intall a card in a slot and machine will not start the is a serious problem in that card like a dead short am I not correct?

Buy a new modem...they are not prohibitively expensive now.
A modem needs the proper drivers to work properly.
These will be included with the new modem.
There is no guarantee that the "off the shelf" modem was working.

P.S. Uninstall all modems listed in Device Manager and re-boot before inserting the new one...
