If it's a system idle process it may be a hard drive index happening.

System Idle Process is exactly what it says it is. It shows how much of the processor is idle.

so let us know what program(s) are hacking up your pc so that the CPU usage is 100%.

Maybe one program is hovering around 100% or you have many programs running that take up all CPU, but anyway, what is it?

I ran a program called Process Explorer to discover what sysem on my machine is draining it.  I discovered that it is the system idle process. It at times runs at 100% alone.  I read that this is an windows NT processor, I am running windows xp.  Do I need It and how do i get ride of it, or stop it.  I also found out that this process has no program associated with it and has no windows certificate, it is listed as unkown. Please advise

        Thanks

        Not always.
In this case, use Process Explorer to check the interrupts under the system idle process - if that's what is using your CPU time, which it probably is as I've seen this before, it's a hardware or driver issue.

It shows what portion of CPU is NOT in use. The bigger the number, the better.

Looks in this case like it's the search indexer.
Go to start - run - type services.msc and hit enter.  Find the Indexing Service and set it to disabled, also stop the service.
              Hope this helps.

I believe the problem has been resolved.  I understand about system idle and what it does. My machines CPU stay @ about 10% now and spikes as I open programs and surf the net but drop after a few seconds.

                  Thanks again ;D ;D ;D
