    Instant log off problem
    « on: April 09, 2008, 08:01:04 PM »
Windows XP machine is logging me off as soon as I log on.  This is a new problem that just started today.  I am unable to get past the logon screen.  It is XP home edition.  Any suggestions?

    Wow, that sounds really annoying.
Try logging in via safe mode?

No I haven't.  Not sure how to do that.  How is that done?   Thanks!

      This may be the culprit:
      Quote
Windows XP logs me off immediately after I log on

This problem turns out to be that the Winlogon userinit entry is being set to "wsaupdater.exe" instead of "userinit.exe".

      1. Boot from a Windows XP CD and go into the recovery console.

      2. Log into the administrator account.

      3. Change your current directory to the system32 folder. type: cd c:\windows\system32

      4. Overwrite wsaupdaterexe with userinit.exe. type: copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

      5. Exit and reboot. type: exit (computer will automatically reboot, take CD out).

Please...only try the above if the other recommendations here fail.

Thanks for the suggestion.  However, I actually never get logged on.  The computer boots up fine and gets me to the profiles screen.  When I select my profile for instance, it begins to load my setting then the screen sort of flashes and it then indicates that it is logging me off and saving my settings and then I am back to where I started on the profiles screen (which I never got past).  I tried in safe mode and it behaves exactly the same.   :'(

Have you tried a System Restore prior to when this started happening?

        Strike that...

Does it happen for every user on the computer...or just you?
