I connected the laptop straight to the cable coming from the wall, with same results. Also, I can see the websites if I take another laptop and plug the ethernet cord that normally goes to the affected laptop, to the replacement laptop.
The problem must be specific to the laptop itself, maybe some security software setting that blocks websites from a specific IP. I can't think of which software could do that.
