start-up programs

Hi
I do not know the proper way to check all these start up programs that i have got
I have just recieved a new laptop, and there was about 20 programs all loading on start up.

I did google some of them and unchecked them as it was safe to do so.
But i could not find any information as to weather it was safe to uncheck the rest
I could be doing it wrong, or going about it in the wrong way.

Is there a right way of checking what these programs do and weather you can uncheck them in msconfig.

here's just an example

adobe acrobat
microsoft windows operating system
configFree(TM)tray
synaptics pointing device
java(TM) platform seb u13
cfFncEnabler

and thats just a few

I don't mind doing the work myself, i just like to know if there is a certain way of checking these programs out, and weather its safe to uncheck them in msconfig.

Its a toshiba L300/L300D series, with vista home premiem on it
