start / all programs /accessories ....then look at the list displayed ...you should see notepad and probably word pad

If you don't see it listed in the program menu, just go to START > RUN, and type notepad and see if it opens.

One other small possibility is that it could've been infected by the Qaz trojan since you don't recall ever deleting notepad.exe.  Here's some info on it:

The Notepad.exe file should be located in the Windows folder on your boot drive.
