    not sure what is wrong
    « on: June 16, 2009, 08:52:38 AM »
hi, i'm new here and having computer issues!

My computer is really really slow, sometimes my CPU usage is at 90-99% and lately when I have been emailing I have been sending blank messages despite typing a reply. It's only when the same has been happening on a forum that I'm starting to question it.

I'm using Firefox. Is it the browser, it is the computer...or bit of both? (hence my post in this section as i was unsure!)

Yesterday I cleared all the files off FF, cleaned up the computer with CCleaner and it appears to run a bit faster but not much. The computer is only 12 months old and has 90GB free out of 200

Have you tried doing an AV full scan of your computer? Also, could you tell us what application is eating up your resources using Task Manager..

Have you done other maintenance stuff? Disk cleanup, defrag, cleaning the inside of your PC..

You could check out evil fantasy's blog about slow computers here

          Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Clearly, firefox.exe    process is eating up 90.55% of your CPU cycles.
            Why, we don't know, yet.

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode).
Use it for a few minutes. Post another Process Explorer log.

            Also....
            Download HijackThis:
            http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
            Install, and run it.
            Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator

              Malware-wise, HJT log looks clean.

When you ran Firefox in Safe Mode (no add-ons), System Idle Process (CPU NOT used)  stands at 91.81%, which is very good.
That means, some FF add-on is eating up your CPU resources.
Start FF normally, disable all add-ons, restart Firefox.
              CPU usage should be normal.
Start enabling add-ons, one by one, restarting FF every time, and checking CPU usage, until you find the culprit.

Main suspects are usually toolbars, like Google.
