    Firefox mystery
    « on: July 26, 2009, 09:58:10 AM »
After downloading and installing firefox 3.5.? It went through it's install process which included uninstalling older plugins and whatever else it said it had to do; it started much more quickly than the older version which was getting so ridiculously slow that i was about to uninstall firefox altogether.

It's been less than a week since i installed 3.5.? ( and the reason i'm writing the ? has to do with the problem ) But now when i click to launch firefox the status circle spins by the cursor as if it's launching but there is nothing there that i can see.
i try launching it again from the start menu or wherever and the same thing happens.

Not knowing what to do i went to my download folder and tried to reinstall it. i get a message that i must first close firefox to install it. There is no indication anywhere that it is running. i restart the computer and launch ie to write this note but once again try launching firefox while ie is up and running. Once again i can see nothing but decide to launch the task manager and there it says that firefox is running using between 70,000 and  159,000 k memory and CPU is at 50.

    My computer is an HP pavillion dv7-1273cl running vista pro 64. HP dv7-1273cl 17"W T6400 2.0 GHz 4GB DDR2 500GB HDD
Does anyone have a clue to what's going on?

Anything else...strange happenings, redirects, this past week ,etc...maybe some malware piggybacked on your download.....Wouldn't hurt to check....

I think you should run the three requested programs  and post the logs in the spyware forum for evilfantasy to review.

There is no sign of any infection. He has 64-bit Windows. HJT is not fully compatible with it, thus you can see a lot of "file missing" entries.

I propose, you go for CLEAN Firefox reinstall: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

              Thanks Broni,

This has been the strangest week or so that i have EVER had with my computers. Clearly they could all have a bug of some sort all at the same time but what are the chances since they are not connected in any way except the wireless router.

None of the problems seem to be of the usual suspects kind.

The clean install sounds like a good place to start before spending hours running all of those other programs

Clean reinstall seems to have fixed the problem in the short run...lets see if it goes coo coo after a couple of days.

For what it's worth: Firefox has been stable so far, however i have not been using this computer very much as my time has been spent fussing with the old gateway laptop that got a trojan horse that hide and duplicated itself after after my anti virus and other programs got rid of it.

The lesson that i learned from getting it is probably worth sharing even though it is embarrassing in a way. My guess is that i should post that info in the virus/malware forum?

Thanks to all for the help with this firefox problem.
