No XP re install after Win7
« on: October 05, 2009, 12:37:05 PM »
They say you can never go home again..
It's not like it used to be.
After installing Windows 7 RC I put in my XP  install disk, and OM very close to the retail version.
Here is what I saw:

After ding a re install of the XP, I no longer had the Win 7 in the boot menu.
What went wrong? I think I know, but I want a better answer.

Win7 does not use the XP/Win style of loading the OS...
What steps did you do this in and how did you get to where you are now ? ?

In this case I had an OEM load of XP on the one drive.
I used a partition program to make two new partitions.
I Installed Windows 7 RC on the last partition.

Worked fine, but I thought I would try to re -install XP.
XP would not add Win 7 RC to the boot menu.
So I had to re install Win 7 RC and it works fine now.

The question is what went wrong?
Apparently XP will not try to put the newer OS in the boot menu.
But is that the exact answer?     ???

it's not that XP won't... it's because it can neither recognize it, OR boot into it from it's boot loader.

one way of fixing that would have probably been to run a repair install with the windows 7 disc... (or one of those recovery thingies on the disc, not to familiar with the various things available on it)
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Thanks Patio.
Thanks BC.

Windows 7 RC has a recovery system.
You burn another DVD with the recovery software!

Which I had done. In an earlier session.
So I did the recovery, and it recovered the Windows 7 RC with no flaw. And called itself drive C: and did not make a boot entry for Windowless XP. In fact, no boot menu shows up.

Gone full circle. will try one more time.

I am ready to throw in the towel.
It seems that if you have installed Windows 7 RC and something goes wrong, you may have to start allover again.
I would guess.
I did a recovery with Windows 7 recovery DVD..
Did it on two different PCs.
Each time the recovery fixed Windows 7...
but removes Windows XP from the boot loader.

So I guess I will find out how you add XP Pro into Win7 boot loader.

]I sure like the BOOT.INI  better.

You could DLoad and try BCEdit and see if it picks up the XP install...
If it does then it's easy to add it to the boot menu.

BCEdit   :o
Thanks, Patio.
I will try that. But first I need an education, ...
I really mess things up when I don't do the homework first.

Search BCedit &  found this thread here on CH:

Going to look it over.   :)

Microsoft Windows 7.
From living in a hurry the NEW Microsoft Windows is called Windows 7.
(Source "Don't quote me!")

And I have used to Windows 7 for several weeks and have found that it is difficult to do maintenance on my XP installation while Windows 7 is on the same disk drive.
So it took  a recommendation from another user, Patio, and put Windows 7 on a separate hard drive.. This makes a lot of sense because if you're going to do an image back to you need to have a separate HDD.  Using the same one for an image back  is not a good idea.  But when using two physical drives everything falls in to place. Windows 7 is on one drive and Windows XP and the backup area is on the other. That makes it simple.  OK. Tthat's all I had to say about this.  Microphone off.  :-X
