    LCD monitor problem
    « on: November 06, 2009, 01:13:07 AM »
I just got a used Viewsonic 19" LCD monitor. I plugged it in and it ran fine for about a half-hour. As I was changing resolutions, the screen went BLACK. The green power light STAYED GREEN, though. I shut off the monitor, then back on. It displayed the screen much less bright for about three seconds and died AGAIN!!!!!! Could this be something INSIDE the monitor that I can fix???             Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Although this is supposed to be a PnP monitor, I downloaded the driver for the monitor ... just in case. That didn't fix the issue, either ...

      1.  When you boot the machine, do you see anything on the screen as the boot process progresses?  The post diagnostic screen, a vendor logo, Windows logo as operating system loads with progress bar underneath?

If you do, then you may have set the screen resolution (and/or attributes) beyond the capabilities of the LCD monitor.

Use the Windows Advanced Options Menu to either boot into "Safe Mode" or "Enable VGA Mode".  I'm hoping this will permit you to boot into Windows with screen at VGA resolution.

If you have a readable screen, use Display Properties to reset the screen attributes to something that LCD monitor will safely support.  If it has a "native" mode, use that.

Reboot the computer back into normal mode and see if you're good to go.

      2.  Windows Advanced Options Menu.  Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu.  Tap the F8 key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display).

What resolution and refresh rate are you trying to drive the monitor at?

If the resolution and refresh rate is set to what the monitor can't display then it may resort to that as a protective measure.

Try to boot into safe mode to see if it will display there.
