For starters, you would have to be connected to a dhcp server..

In most cases, that would be a simple home router or Internet Gateway.

Are you connected to one of those?

OK..   If Windows is assigning you an automatic private IP address, this is most likely because the connectivity between the computer and the router/dhcp server is not up to par OR dhcp is not enabled on the router/server....   When Windows boots up, by default, it uses dhcp to broadcast to the router/dhcp server that it wants an ip address..  If that service is not available then windows automatically assigns a class B private address..

Do you know how to access the router to check if dhcp is enabled in the router?

There are three other computers running through the router and they are on the net with no trouble

OK, that info. helps a lot..

Click START from the desktop, right click "my computer" and click on "properties"...click on the Hardware tab and then click on Device Manager..  In the list of hardware in device manager, look where it says, "network adapters", are there any signs indicating an error?  yellow exclaimation marks?
If you see no indication of an error... Then the driver is properly installed and we can move on..

Next thing to check would be if DHCP is enabled in Windows... Go into Control Panel and open up Network Connections...  Right click on the network adapter and select properties...  Highlight TCP/IP and click on the "Properties" button..   Make sure the the "Obtain and IP address automatically" box is checked...

After you've checked these things post back so we can move on..

Using a four port IP-Link Router - 108M Wireless Router TL-WR642G and two other computers are working fine
on the same router no trouble with them.

dhcp server issues out of range IP address

If this was the case then the other computers connected to the router would most likely have out-of-range addresses as well...   But I guess it wouldn't hurt at all to unplug the router to restart it, as the thread suggested in Geek's post..         Be sure to power down the computer as well... Power on the computer only after the router has fully booted up..

try this step and see what you get

Thank you both for your support but I found the problem it was a cable that that I was using. Changed the cable and all is working fine. Once again many thanks.  Ojas

cat5 cables are used by hip computer nerds to make cool costume jewelry for their wives.

Their wives subsequently serve them 8-track tapes for dinner.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
