The only shortcut to take that i can see would be to borrow a Vista DVD with SP2 included on it...

Can you borrow an SP2 Vista DVD ? ?
Again that would save alot of time if you are on a slow connection...

PS: Do you have an imaging app installed for backups ? ?

I could probably hunt one down.. I think my neighbour may have one she has just bought a new laptop.. could be 7 though..

I have 'macrium reflect' for backups.. but never used it.. is that reliable?

Better to do it after the clean install and all your important apps are setup and you have everything tweaked...
If you image now you will inherit any current issues you have if you use that image...
