Merlin and Raptor,
It sounds like we went into the twilight zone on this one. I'm either going to live with it as is, or upgrade my PC as they've been recommending for a couple years.

Thanks for all your help and sorry I wasn't savvy enough to help solve the problem but I'm going to give up on this for now.

OK.....sometimes its....a real pain winxp....finiky....most pc makers have patch software to help.....you?/ find the updates......m$oft  has bought down the hammer on what hardware is used with winxp......longhorn is worst...as they are going to restrict what software is loading with it..... email/text next....please mr bob can i use my pc sir.......you may find that the cd drives run ok on win9x....machinces.....
