    memory
    « on: February 20, 2010, 12:02:01 PM »

I installed two 1024 blocks of memory in a friends computer. I was replacing her 2 blocks of 256mb since her computer would not let her do many of things available these  days.
All seemed to go well until I plugged the computers power plug in. At that point the fan started blowing and it shouldn't have since I had not yet turned the computer on.
I also no longer could get the power button to work. I could open and close the CD door and everything appeared to be on and working but all I could get on the monitor was the "no signal" error message.
I tried three times (checking for mistakes) but everything seemed secure with both the memory sticks and the wires to and from the power buttton.

Here are the specs of her computer:

    Windows XP
    Intrnet explorer

    Those aren't specs...

You've given the operating system, how about the actual computer model, the memory sticks you put in, etc. Browser type is useless in this type of situation.

Are you certain the module(s) you inserted are compatible with her system? How did you select the memory module(s)?

They are made by Kingston. I bought them from Tiger. I went to the manufacturers website to make sure of the pin count but that's all. I thought the pin count would be enough. Wrong huh?

Yes, wrong. Put the old ram back. Then go to Crucial.com to select the correct ram for the system.

Kinsgton also has a memory selector tool on their website.  Likewise, newegg.com has a Memory Compatibility Tool
