boot menu win98 winxp
« on: July 02, 2005, 06:44:03 PM »
I have a problem in that using 98 and xp on one drive on separate partitions I am now unable to access xp.
On booting I go straight to 98 -the boot menu does not appear to allow me a choice of os.
This was not always the case and only occurred after I renstalled 98 from a back up copy from a different partition on the same drive.
The boot .ini just shows  only one os present..
I do not wish to reinstall xp.
So does anyone know how to restore the boot menu ?
Regards,
Toju

Toju:

Windows 98 and XP use different files to boot.  Simply editing the boot.ini file will not be enough to be able to boot to XP once more.  You will also have to replace the system partition (the "C: drive") files that Windows 98 overwrote when you reinstalled that operating system (OS).

If you have backup copies of the files from the root directory (the "C: drive") let us know and one of us will tell you which files to restore.  If you don't have backup copies, you will have to do a repair of Windows XP:

    FED:

Right, the files to boot to Windows XP will be located on the system partition (most likely drive C: in this case) and the operating system files will be on the boot partition (probably drive D:).  Without the proper XP files on te system partion, Toju will be unable to get to the XP desktop.

Either he's speaking a different language to me or he has 1 drive with 2 partitions and an OS on each.
He needs a bootloader, it's probably in his windows because if he had previously used an after market one he would be aware of it.
I only know of the linux ones.
