Integrated video card intefering with stand alone video card?
    « on: February 23, 2010, 12:00:22 PM »
I have a W3105 eMachines PC and I am trying to add a NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS graphics card so that I can watch videos on my TV.

I have the card installed as well as the drivers.
I have tried disabling the integrated card in device manager.
I cannot locate anything that refers to the integrated card in BIOS to shut it down that way.
I've tried starting in safe mode.
I've pretty much tried everything except a fresh install of Windows.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or can you tell me if you think that the fresh install would do the trick?

    Thanks!

Disable on board video in the bios

Here are the options on BIOS:
      Integrated Peripherals -
      AC97 Controller
      Onboard LAN Controller
      Onboard LAN Option ROM
      USB Controller
      USB Device Legacy Support
      IDE Device Configuration: OnChip SATA
                                               IDE DME transfer access
                                               OnChip IDE Channel 0
                                               OnChip IDE Channel 1
IO Device Configuration: OnBoard FDC Controller
                                              COM Port 1
                                              Parallel Port
                                              Parallel Port Mode

Nothing else has any options and I know that the graphics cards are all saying IRQ Channel 16.

Then disabling it in device manager should have been the correct solution. Sorry. Have you tried calling the system manufacturer or checking their website forum?

I guess I'll use their forum.

You do have you monitor connected to the new card, right?  And, how have you connected your TV, to what port on the card?

Have you searched through every screen in your BIOS?  Look for something labeled Primary Graphics Adapter, or AGP ..., etc.

Anytime I connect my monitor to the new card I have no display, so I can't control the computer. The new card has an s-video port and that was connected to the TV.

I contacted Gateway/eMachines and they told me that I needed to Set the initial display first as the AGP slot. I went into Chipset features and changed AGP Driving Control to manual (seemed like the only logical option) and nothing improved.

This is what is under Chipset:
AGP and P2P Bridge Control [Enter]
          --AGP Aperture Size [128M]
          --AGP Driving Control [Auto]
          --AGP Fast Write [Disabled]
          --AGP Master WS Write [Disabled]
          --AGP Master WS Read [Disabled]
          --AGP 3.0 Calibration Cycle [Disabled]
          --VGA Share Memory Size [64M]

It is really weird. The NVIDIA card is showing in Device Manager and the integrated card is disabled. My monitor is connected to the integrated card, but Device Manager says it's connected to the NVIDIA card.

          It's driving me crazy. :P

If you can set this to 0MB, that will turn it off.  If not, maybe there is a jumper on the motherboard.

I did this exact same thing a couple of days ago on a friends computer and didn't need to go into the BIOS.

I put in the card, restarted with the monitor still connected to the old port.  Loaded the drivers, in device manager I disabled the on board video, made sure the new card was enabled, powered down and switched the monitor to the new card and it was up and running.

If both video cards are enabled it will do strange things.  Even though it looks like the on board video is disabled, it sounds like it's not.

I would start from scratch and see if that solves the problem.
