Issues upgrading to Windows 7 Pro
    « on: February 27, 2010, 12:06:25 PM »
    Hi,

My computer is a 2008 HP Pavillion a6200t.  I currently have Vista Home Basic 32 bit installed.  I purchased an upgrade DVD for Windows 7 Pro last week.  I set my computer to boot from disk first and the DVD would not boot, when I did AutoRun from "MyComputer" the upgrade program closes as soon as it starts.

What am I doing wrong?  The DVD Upgrade is legit and the License Key is valid.

    Thanks,
    Brad

What exactly happens when you try to boot to the dvd?

When I try to boot the DVD the computer goes to a black screen, the DVD drive makes a "rough" sound, pauses, then boots from the hard drive.

I tried inserting the disk after going into my admin account, the program starts up for a split second, I see a blip of the front page for the upgrade disk, then the program completely shuts down.

Thanks for all your responses so far too!  :)

Maybe your DVD drive is bad, or the DVD disk is bad.

I have not had any other issues with the drive to date, so I guess you're right about the DVD.  I will have to exchange it for a different one.  I installed all the updates possible for Vista, also ran the mocrosoft Vista to Windows 7 compatibility program which didn't find any compatibility issues.

            I highly suggest this method...

I'm sure glad you posted this. I had no idea there was so much involved in a clean install. After upgrading Vista to 7, I am thinking about changing from 32-bit to 64-bit.

The best part of it is most Users are NOT aware you can do a Full clean install from an Upgrade DVD...
              A real $$ saver...if you ask me...

You can't do an upgrade install from 32-bit to 64-bit or vice versa.  It's clean install or bust when changing CPU architecture.

Part of the problem is most people don't generally deal with computer problems. So for most they think that close enough is good enough.
