Toshiba Satellite A105-S4074, Win XPSP3, 1.5 GB RAM, Intel 1.6ghz dual core processor.
Computer starts and runs fine - for 10 min +/-, then "locks." Display stays on, touchpad works but system is "frozen" - clicking on anything brings no response. After a few more minutes, a continuous Beeeeep starts and stays on until a "hard" shutdown (press and hold the power button.
Seems like classic overheating and investigation shows the fan to run at start but it stops after several minutes. Replaced the fan, same problem. Speedfan showed CPU temp as high as 60, both cores, before the system froze and Speedfan quit working.
But, here's the funny part. Memtest 86+ ran for 8 or 9 hours; an Ubuntu CD boot will keep running, albeit, the fan does not run.
I'm baffled. It seems to me that the problem has to be hardware related - motherboard, BIOS, etc - but, if that's the case, I can't explain why the computer doesn't freeze running Memtest or running the live Ubuntu CD.
