AVG Free E-mail scanner
« on: July 07, 2005, 04:46:23 PM »
Could someone tell me the steps to take in order to correctly configure the E-mail scanner for AVG Free when using Mozilla Thunderbird and Gmail.

Or will the personal E-mail scanner suffice? It was not able to select Mozilla Thunderbird from the list and do not quite understand the configuration menu.

I don't think any antivirus software will work for internet-based E-Mail... However, AVG will probably cover Thunderbird.

This may help with AVG: http://www.j79zlr.com/howto.php?id=11

Flame is probably right, no scanner for internet based email.

Hope this helps. 8)

The website is not of much use, I now understand how to use the wizard but I can not get it to work.

It can not establish contact using AVG Free as a, how would you say, middleman

I once had the scanning viruses message pop up, but it took a very long time for it to dissapear, I assume this was a freak accident as I had retraced my steps and it did not work a second time.

I think that Fed may be able to help me out as he seems to be quite fond of AVG.

Using web based email is no different than browsing an interactive website, it has nothing to do with your own computer based email program.
There is no way or no need to try & get AVG to check web based email because you are accessing it with your browser not your email program.
Of course AVG will still give you normal browser type protection.
Unless things have changed since I last had a hotmail account which was years ago.

      Straighten me out Raptor.
Thunderbird is an email program like outlook express?
Gmail is an email server like your own isp email server?

That's news to me, I thought Gmail would be like hotmail?

Thunderbird is an E-mail Client. Gmail is an E-Mail provider. It is a better version of Hotmail...

But do you get your Gmail through Thunderbird or your browser?

Both if you want. Gmail allows you to use it as Web-Based, or you can use POP.

Then AVG should protect Thunderbird, what was the question? LOL!
I blame Raptor for starting this, I don't even know what the problem is anymore.
Raptor should send his Gmail account a virus then go & collect it with Thunderbird & see if AVG picks it up.

lol  A confusing situation. However, you may want to rethink that virus part  ;)

There's no point having protection if you don't know it works.

            1. Straighten me out Raptor.
            2. Thunderbird is an email program like outlook express?
            3. Gmail is an email server like your own isp email server?

            1. No comment.
            2. Yes
            3. Gmail is a web based E-mail service, but it supports POP and IMAP.

The problems I experienced earlier may have been related to a temporarily malfunctioning Internet connection. I now get the AVG E-mail scanner.

However, it takes ages to connect and frankly, I do not think it is connecting at all. I can not send messages either.

Gmail requires an account name to log in. It also uses SSL. Could this be an obstacle? Seeing that I can not enter this information anywhere in AVG Free, I think it is.

Also, with the E-mail scanner not configured, AVG Free did not even take notice of the incoming Eicar test viruses. Some program.  >:(
