(clears throat) That's why freeware is a last resort for me. So  many bugs... Never fixed...

If you never use freeware, then how do you know it is so bug ridden? Windows XP isn't freeware, yet it's bug ridden and it doesn't seem like it ever gets fixed... Do not be so biased.

I need a better guide, one that is dedicated to Gmail and AVG Free. I shall look for it, unless anyone has a good recommendation

Appearantly, this information, will also work for Thunderbird.

ZoneAlarm was blocking the access attempts. Even though it did not prompt me for a connection nor did it show in the Firewallogs, I had to set AVG E-mail scanner to Trusted/Internet for the server section.

This worked once, until I blocked the access to the Internet to determine wheter both or only one needed to be tagged. Now it stopped working. Great.

AVG Free did not even take notice of the incoming Eicar test viruses.

That's strange, I sent myself the 6 test emails, my server knocked out 3 (which I don't like, I'd prefer to get them myself) and AVG tagged the other 3 as {VIRUS!}.
    AVG performed faultlessly.  :)
But I do use the superior email program, Outlook Express.  :D

I know about the bugs, I know a freeware junkie who has it. He told me there's a lot of bugs. I've seen some of the problems.

It may be because you store E-mails under the default folder. I store them on another partition.

Or perhaps Gmail neutralized them. I now notice there are no attachments.

I think it would be hard for AVG to catch them if they aren't there.  ;)
