Windows7 Activate issue after replacing motherboard and CPU
    « on: April 02, 2010, 03:15:02 PM »
I'm having activate windows now problem.
I had to rebuild my computer due to bad motherboard and CPU issue. So I had to replace my motherboard and CPU. I kept the same hard drive, so I didn't have to re-load Windows.

Now i get a message Activate windows now. When I try to use my product key, it associates the key to my old motherboard I assume, so it will not accept my product key.

What do i need to do to get my product key to work?

You need to reformat.  That is something that you have to always do when replacing your motherboard.  Theres just no way around it.

got it. Needed to have MS accept my product key due to hardware change.
Would re-formatting prevent the hardware tied to product key?
