Have you been to shops (such as Best Buy) to physically try their laptops out?
From what you've told us so far, you'd need a mid-range laptop.
Recommended specs:
1.6-2.4GHz Dual Core
1-2GB Ram
120-320GB Hard Disk (HDD, not SSD)
You'll also want to check battery life.
