New to mac and I'm having a problem with downloading it says application that created it cannot be found im not sure how to even check to see which applications I can run.

Google the extention of the file and there will be suggestions of which application opens the file.

For example:  google the .txt extention and you will  be informed that notepad will open the file.
google the .pps extention and you will  be informed that the power point viewer will open the file.

Once the file is on the desktop, right click and find the program needed  to open the file.

        I doubt it.

@OP, MS-DOS is not some weird short form for Mac OS. Please notice that this is in the Microsoft section. There is an Apple section of the forum where they'd be happy to help you.
