    Please help: VIRUS
    « on: May 13, 2010, 04:27:39 PM »
Hello- I'm new to this sorry if i am posting wrong or something.

I have a virus that has been affecting my system for a while but I cannot seem to shift it. The biggest problems it is causing is within my internet browsing, when I click search result links from google (or any where) it takes me to random websites-generally the second or third time i click it works. More recently I keep getting 'internet explorer cannot display webpage' errors but this one does not go a away, if it doesnt work once it wont work full stop. My laptop is currently running a disk check each time it boots also (i have allowed it to complete a check, but it is now doing it each time-personally i didnt think this was related to the virus issue as it has just started and the virus has been here ages).

    OS: Vista
    I use
    avast antivirus free edition
Malwarebytes free edition (I get errors when i try to update)
    CCleaner
Windows firewall (I tried to download a suggested third party firewall by this site but kept getting 'ie cannot display webpage error- outpost downloaded but then wouldn't open)

I dont have anything I consider to be suspicious looking in my add or remove programs section
I also cannot download the suggested superantispyware

I would really appreciate any help at all I have been battling with this for so long tempted to call an IT guy and get him to wipe the laptop but I would like to try what i can first.

Thank you in advance and apologies for the lengthy post I have attached the two log files i could get but i could not get a superantispyware one as I cant download it due to the virus i also cant download sybot search and destroy.

    Hope this is informative enough

    thank you again

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. I am working under the guidance of one of the specialist of this forum so it may take a bit longer to process your logs.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
Sorry for being late in getting to your post. The forums are really busy.

You are using an out-dated MBAM. Please uninstall it and download a newer version.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
    • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.
    Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
    ===========================================
Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O23 - Service: Symantec Lic NetConnect service (CLTNetCnService) - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing)

Important: Close all open windows except for HijackThis and then click Fix checked.

    Once completed, exit HijackThis.

Thank you very much this seems to have done the trick laptop turned off half way through the full scan so when I rebooted I only had time for a quick scan, i will run a full scan later for extra insurance but there was 38 infected items which are now gone. When I did the Hijack this part I ticked the bits I could that you suggested and pressed fix selected hope this is what i was meant to do.

The laptop still runs a disk check every time I boot up, this may not be related at all but do you have any suggestions how to disable it?

I think i may have a corrupted adobe photoshop file on my C drive, might this be related?

      Thanks again

What do you mean by disk check. The only time it usually runs a chkdsk is when it has been shut down by a power failure or someone hitting the off button.

Anything is possible when dealing with malware. The only way to make sure is to run MBAM, full scan and post the logs here.

      SUPERAntiSpyware

If you already have SUPERAntiSpyware be sure to check for updates before scanning!

      Download SuperAntispyware Free Edition (SAS)

      * When asked to Update the program definitions, click Yes
      * If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here
      * Next click the Preferences button.

•Under Start-Up Options uncheck Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts
      * Click the Scanning Control tab.
      * Under Scanner Options make sure only the following are checked:

      •Close browsers before scanning
      •Scan for tracking cookies
      •Terminate memory threats before quarantining
      Please leave the others unchecked

•Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.

      * On the main screen click Scan your computer
      * On the left check the box for the drive you are scanning.
      * On the right choose Perform Complete Scan
      * Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
      * After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK
      * Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next
      * It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes

•To retrieve the removal information please do the following:
•After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntiSpyware icon on your desktop.
•Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
