I have windows xp.  I had a problem with a program I downloaded. I called tech support for help.  He asked me to open command prompt.  When I click on it nothing happens.

Judging by the amount of information being made available, that could be a long process.

Ok.  I had to download a program from the internet for school.  It wouldn't work so I called tech support.  He told me to open cmd prompt to get some info for him.  But I guess that is irrelevant.  When I tried to open cmd prompt nothing happened.

Is this a computer in school or one that you use at home?

If you go to start > run > and type in explorer.exe

then navigate to the path that salmon has provided please... c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe.  don't click on anything in there but could you just check that the cmd.exe is in there please.

Right Click it and press Open.

Now go to Task Manager (CTLR + ALT + Delete).

Do you see CMD.exe in the processes list?

Does your parents use the same computer as yourself?

If so right click on the cmd.exe (in c:\windows\system32) and "run as" so you can run as an administrator, you may need the parent that has setup the computer to put in their details as they will be classed as the administrator.

If this is or isn't the case can you let us know please and we'll try and find another solution for you.

                        Thanks,
                        MM

And on another note, what exactly is the problem you're having with the software? What was the technician trying to find out?

Perhaps we can help you get the information another way.

Maybe "hide system files" is checked in Folder Options. Or quite possibly there is a virus infection. Regarding the "school" thing, it is quite common for Americans to refer to college or university as "school". This can confuse people in other English language speaking countries where "school" is for kids between 5 and 18 years old

To check if you are a computer administrator please follow the instruction below.

Start > control panel > user accounts >

When this box comes up click on "Change an account"

You should then see your account name.  Can you tell us what it says under your account name please?

I agree with Carbon Dudeoxide also.

                              Thanks,

You should not need to do this, but if you're happy with things as they are, maybe it's better to leave it there.
