It doesn't matter.  What makes you think that it does matter?

We here on the forums endeavor to help users (new and familiar) with issues pertaining to their use and enjoyment of computers. However we also encourage people to spend some time using available resources (like the WEB) to broaden their knowledge. In this case a simple search on Google brought forth this explanation of "RAM". http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/R/ram.html .
I encourage you now to go and try some research on your own to obtain information on what the memory of a HDD is and how it functions. Who knows like eating a peanut you may get hooked and learn more than you can imagine. truenorth

In the simplest of terms, hard disk space determines how much room you have to install programs / applications. Memory (ram) determines the ability and efficiency to RUN those programs. Beyond that, GOOGLE is your friend ;)

obviously knowing the difference between RAM and HD memory is not a laymans topic lol  ;)

Was this directed at Truenorth? I think is reply was well written and very helpful. Did he answer your question directly? No, but this is a forum, not Yahoo Answers. In this case, Truenorth was looking beyond your question, and came to the conclusion that it implied you might ask similar disjoint questions in the future. He was trying to save both you and forum members time by giving you a suggestion as to something you can do to find these things out for yourself. personally I commend him for his forward thinking in this instance.

perhaps. Perhaps not. As far as I'm concerned it should be one of the very first things anybody learns about when they start using a computer. More to the point, the question is exactly the type of thing that should be plugged into google to try to find an answer.

Can you ask questions on the forum? Of course. but when you ask a question whose answer could have been found in less then 10 seconds with a search engine query it's somewhat disappointing. If you want opinions on something, like wether it's better to have more hard drive space or RAM, that is a more open-ended question that doesn't always have a definite answer (costs vary, the actual purpose and context can determine how one proceeds, etc).

Secondly, if you're going to reply to those truly helpful posts with a rude recommendation to essentially shut up then <you> may as well not bother posting the question to begin with.

Basically...  RAM is the computer's short term memory and the Hard Drive is it's long term.  A hard drive can store data pretty much forever whereas RAM looses it's contents when the PC is turned off.  Your 140gb HDD and 2gb RAM is fairly standard for a modern PC.

You will almost always have much less RAM that Hard Drive space.  My PC has a 1terabyte and a 320gb hard drive and just 2gb RAM.  It's a fairly standard PC.

My cucumber. It's bigger. I think vegetables can be very sensuous, don't you?
No, vegetables are sensual. People are sensuous.

My name's Marion. People call me Mrs. Wormer.
Oh, we have a Dean Wormer at Faber.
How interesting. I have a husband named Dean Wormer at Faber. Still want to show me your cucumber?
