sound problems

each time i turn on my laptop a small red and white cross appears over my sound icon in the bottom corner and does not let me turn on the sound as it says windows audio service is not enabled. how do I enable it?

START - RUN - Services.msc (press ENTER)
Set "Windows Audio" to Automatic and reboot
