Moniter loses signal
« on: July 20, 2005, 09:12:18 PM »
For the past few weeks I have been having a problem with my moniter losing the signal from the computer the second I try to load higher-end games.  Diablo II works fine, but when I try to run games such as World of Warcraft, Battlefield 2, Joint Operations, and NFS Underground.

I switched my graphics card with my friend's to see if that was the problem, but my moniter continued to lose the signal.  I have installed new drivers for my video card multiple times and it does nothing.  I also have installed the latest DirectX.  This also did nothing.

I've been trying troubleshooters but nothing seems to relate to quite to what's happening.  The only thing left I can think of being the problem is my motherboard.

Any words of wisdom, anyone?

Thanks

Step by step, describe what happens when you try and run a game?

Everything is working fine - I can surf the internet, listen to music..anything.  With World of Warcraft, when I open it the moniter loses the signal before I even get to the log in screen.  With other games I lose the signal after the splash screen.  Then I have to manually turn off my computer and turn it back on.  Today it actually did it after I tried to run a Java application.  I'm stumped. ???

Another thing, when I select "Restart" it will shut down and then turn its self back on but the moniter does not come back on.  When I select "Shut Down" and then turn the computer  back on it works fine.

It sounds like a ram problem to me, do you know how much you have & what the configuration is?
        1 stick or 2 etc?

That could be the problem actually.  When I boot up it checks NVRAM every time and it didn't used to do that.

I have 1 stick of 512mb RAM.  Not sure about the speed.  I could take it out and find out for you if you like.

Swap it with your friend and give it a try.

          No that didn't do it...

Also, when the screen does go black, I hear a high pitched sound shut off.  Could that have to do with the hard drive?

Remember what you did with your video drivers?
Do the same with your sound drivers too.

You have found the correct driver?

Try using 1024x786x32 at the highest refresh rate that your monitor is capable of.

Can you try your ram in a different slot?

Can you test the monitor on another computer?

Also be certain that your videocard fans and/or heatsink are not clogged with dust, it may be overheating and shutting down the second you demand performance.

Switched the moniter and it works fine on my friend's computer.

I know it's not the video card that's the problem cause I switched that with my friend's too and my computer did the same thing.

You may wish to download the latest drivers and install them, but use the following tool once the previous drivers are removed:

                Driver Cleaner
-- Removes driver remains after the uninstallation thereof.
                -- Read the instructions carefully!

Well I did that and now the moniter loses the signal when Windows tries to boot up.  Only way it works now is on safe mode.
