    Windows, safe mode won't load
    « on: July 06, 2010, 04:22:41 PM »
I have three challenges I'm hoping someone can help me with. As of last night, Windows isn't loading. It sometimes gets as far as the wallpaper and stops. It has also loaded as far as icons, the start button and the time, but nothing works. I cannot access safe mode. I can get as far as choosing safe mode and the series of "multi disk..." lines that appear, but it stops there. Also, each time I restart the chkdsk starts also. I can't provide you with logs since I cannot access the programs. I can tell you that prior to things going south I had run SAS and Malwarebytes (because the comp was running slow) and both found nothing. In addition, just before things shut down, Avast went inoperational but I didn't have the chance to investigate further. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!  :)

Hello  and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. I am working under the guidance of one of the specialist of this forum so it may take a bit longer to process your logs.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

Go to this link to create a Rescue CD or to this site to create a Rescue USB. Carefully follow all the instructions for whichever method you choose.

      Hi SuperDave,

I created and ran the rescue CD to no avail. It didn't find anything to remove. When I restarted nothing had changed - greeted with chkdsk and then stuck with just the wallpaper on the screen. Where should I go from here?

Ok. Let's try another rescue disk before we move on to something else.BTW, do you have your OS disk?

We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.
      • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
      • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using ISO Burner.
      • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
      • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
      • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
      • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
      • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
      • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
      • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
      • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
      • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
      • When finished, the file will be saved  in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
      • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
      • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

I have the eMachines recovery disk that came with the comp.

I've not dealt with anything in the bios before. I looked at the link you provided and it seems pretty clear, as long as it tells me which key to press to enter set-up. Given the comp's current state, I'm not sure if I'll be able to access the file to copy and post, but I'll give it a whirl.

The link for OTLPE didn't take me anywhere so I went to geekstogo and downloaded from there. Inserted the disk and the start-up process began on it's own. I did not have any set-up option come up for entering the bios.

The OTLPE desktop came up and I clicked on the icon. It did not ask me "Do you wish to load the remote registry?" Boxes came up about remote user profiles and loading all remaining users and were checked accordingly. A large gray box came up with several smaller option boxes. The only one concerning drivers had none, use safelist and all as options. The only on mentioning Microsoft had to deal with file age. Those options were how many days, use company name whitelist and skip Microsoft files. Two boxes concerned the registry: Standard registry with options none, safelist and all, and Extra Registry with the same options. Three other boxes concerned services, files created within, and files modified within.

So all that is still on my screen and I await further direction before clicking "Run Scan".  :)

Ran the scan with the pre-set settings. Have a log but now the mouse won't work so I can't copy the log to the flash drive. Tried a second mouse to no avail (both worked on another computer). Did this yesterday too, but kicked back in working order after a bit. I'm going to call it a night and hope the mouse is working in the a.m.

Still a no-go on the mouse. Don't know if there is a way to use keys to copy the log to the flash drive. Any suggestions?

CTRL+A to select all, CTRL+ C to copy and CTRL + V to paste.

Thanks SuperDave. I did find those key combos online, but I don't know how to paste to the flash drive w/o being able to bring up and click on either a copy-to menu or the list of devices with removable storage. Also, I was gone yesterday and when I came back there was an ad for Window Blinds 4 on top of the log file. I have no visible cursor, so not sure what to do to remove the ad screen to access the log file screen. I could try ALT+F4 but since I don't know where the cursor is I don't know which screen it would close. Wish I was more computer savvy and could just move past these annoyances and deal with the actual problem, whatever it be. Thanks for your patience and assistance.

Is the connection for the mouse solid? Did you try  another mouse?

Tried ports on front and back and tried a second mouse. Still nothing.

I'm afraid we're at an impasse. I need to see the logs and you need to get the mouse working to send me the logs. I would suggest that you start a thread in the Software or Hardware forum of this site and see if you can get help there. If you get it working, come back to this thread and we finish checking the computer.
