question on downloading zipped progs
« on: July 05, 2010, 05:31:09 AM »
Hello,

I have always been puzzled by downloads  :P.

After I download a zipped programme my newly created folder is full of zillions of subfiles...confusing.

Do you know what I mean?

Where is the mistake?

No, they said "zipped" file, not "compressed" file, so it must be .zip (or .zipx). Not that it makes a difference anyway.

"Zipping" or "compressing" files involves compressing the files into one file which makes them easier to email, upload, etc. When you download a zipped or compressed file, the opposite happens - you open it and all these files appear. These are the files that are inside the compressed file.

Thanks everyone :),

the problem here on my part is that I have not yet developped sufficient feeling for folders and such.

And the important thing here would be to put all these 'useless' subfiles into a folder or subfolder where they dont bother.

It may also come useful if I delete the zip.folder as soon as the programme has been unzipped to limit confusion-possibility  :D

"unzip", "unpack", "extract" are all the same, right?

Are you using some sort of program to unzip the files?

A good way to keep track of extracted files is to place all of the files from an archive in it's own folder, and name the folder so you know what it contains. Most archiving programs (such as winrar) can be setup to do this automatically, so as soon as you extract the files the program automatically creates a folder with the same name as the original archive and place the extracted files there.
