Okay.  How do I find out who that is without having to take the computer apart?

      1) Look in Device Manager
      2) Download and run Belarc Advisor

Okay...I looked in Device Manager, and it tells me I don't have software installed for the sound card I have.  So apparently it was lost when I had a virus last week and had to re-load Windows XP.  And since we've moved since the last time I had to do this, I can't find the software disk went to this.

Any recommendations on a good audio software that's compatible with Windows XP?

        One thought! ;D

In Device manager, Click on the + sign near Sound, video and game controllers and see sound card listed.

if not, it could be listed as unknown device/other device. Right-click on the entry for the "unknown device" and then select "Properties". In the "Properties" window, click on the "Details" tab and let me know the string displayed under Device ID.

        For example: PCI_VEN13782 etc.

This will help you to find the manufacture and name of the sound card. ANd you may find driver links using the device IDs

        May be it helps :)

          Hi,

Okay.  Under "Audio Codecs" it says ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMACM.

Under "Multimedia Audio Controller" it says PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24D5&SUBSYS_B0101462&REV_02\3&13C080C5&0&FD.

I think it is Realtek AC 97 Audio, I'm 95% sure it is.

If you have the audio build in to your motherboard you can do a search on that and find some of your drivers.

The Device ID says it is a

            Chip Number:    82801 EB/ER
            Chip Description:    Audio Controller

But I also find the VIA Technologies Vinyl AC'97 Audio Codec also listed.

Can you share the system board model number so that we can find it.

The below said link also list drivers which could work with: VEN_8086&DEV_24D5
