Computer boots to Windows1 folder need to change to Windows

My bros friend reconfigured my comp to boot to a folder he made of windows and called it Windows1 a copy of the original Windows folder which is still in my comp my comp is booting up to the page with the normal and safemode lines on it then goes to the c:/ line i nned to make my comp boot up on the original windows folder cause windows1 has mi sing files in it hi mes and a couple others how can i do this can i type in something at the c;/ line to reconfigure it to bootup looking for the windows and not the windows1 folder i have no win98cd  at all now if not can i search for and retrieve a sertain folder from the comp like my documents and how do i do that thatnks for any help you guys can offer and God Bless...

Hi guys , my bros friend did this about 6 yrs ago weve moved since then and havent seen him since, he said he did it to have a backup of windows cause the original folder got messed up i remember him telling me now that he had the computer booting up on the Windows1 folder and not the original windows folder so now all i need to do is how do i switch the computer to bootup and search out the original windowsa folder to work the original Windows folder is fixed and in there the computer is just trying to run on the copy folder which is messed up it says its missing a few files but i know that the original windows is in there and has all the files cause i tryed a copy windows and it started going through this list and i saw the files on the list if no one knows how to make the computer restart searching for the windows folder how do i COPY the original windows folder into the windows1 folder to replentish the files that are missing? again i have no windows cd for the comp and the floppy reboot disc just sits in there and does nothing, thanks for any help you can give me guys.

So if you've been using it like this for the past 6 years, why now? what prompted you to try to "resolve" this?

Also, the only real way to resolve this problem is to reinstall windows from scratch. At least ,that's All I can recommend myself, since I haven't a bloody clue as to the state of the system or what has been done to set it in this configuration. Even with your vague recollection of what he told you 6 years ago which includes such heady examples as "I saw the files on the list".

In any case, to my understanding Windows 98 is fairly similar to windows 3.1, that is, you could install multiple in installations at the dos prompt. in order to "Boot" into the respective "version" you change to the directory ("cd windows" or "cd windows1" in your case) and use the optimistically named command "win". Of course if as you say you simply copied/renamed a folder and you try to "boot" in this fashion to the copy it will fail because as far as it's concerned it's still in the old folder and will start from there.

Hi guys I cant explain it i keep doing wht ppl are telling me here but to no avail i type in cd\windows and it changes and says c:\windows> this is right below the list of startups by the way of safe mode normal and so on, i got everything back into the windows1 folder but now its saying this vmm32.vxd is needed to run windows and its not there and ive tried to get a way to reinstall that but its just to complicated to try and do it  i dont know if getting a cd will just put in that one lowsy file that i need to start up my comp again but ill try if i can get the mnoney to get a cd i barely have enough to eat on right now but i try everything and nothing changes i hit cd windows and it WILL change and say c:\windows but when i turn off ther comp and restart it it goes right back to saying c:\ blah blah \windows1\ and so on  i would just trash this comp and hard drive but i have flightsim2004 with about 700 planes on it and i dont want to lose them have alot of planes that you cant get any more. SO heres another question, is there sny way to search for and retrieve a folder like games\fs2004 and get that folder out without windows running right now? and if so how would i do it? Mind you i have NO START BUTTON or windows screen at all its goes to the list of NORMAL, SAFE MODE, Prompt to safe mode, then goes down to text and says c:\ windows1 and thats it. Leave it to me to have the most messed up comp that cant be fixed its always my luck to have it tho. thanks for any help guys and God Bless
