    Hi,

    I got a BSOD on my laptop.  I ran buescreenviewer and found out there are 3 potential causes. The laptop is a Dell Studio XPS and isn't even a year old.

    usbvideo.sys
    ntoskrnl.exe

    the other, which i can't remember at the moment, only came up one time.  The two listed above are the main culprits.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do with these files so I no longer get a blue screen?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    1) If you only got the blue screen once I wouldn't worry about it.
    2) Do you know the exact blue screen error? If not, go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart" and then reboot. If you do get another blue screen, it should remain up so you can copy the error message.

      The error is: 0x1000007e System Thread Exception Not Handled

      Says it's usbvideo.sys that's causing it.

      That's the most common one, however one time I got one that said Driver Power State Failure (0x0000009f), but that only happened once.  That was cause by ntoskrnl.exe.

      usbvideo.sys is a system file - it cannot cause problems on its own. What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, etc)?

      Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)
      No installation required.
      Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
      When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
      Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
      Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

        I am at school at the moment, I don't have the system with me.  Thank you for your help.  Before I do as you said, I want to let you know that I did an sfc/ scannow and a few other minor things, like chkdsk to see if those would resolve the issue.  The system has been running fine for about 1 week now, so I figure I should give it a month before it can be determined whether or not it has been fixed.  I will let you know. Thank You.

        I will post the log if I get another BSOD anytime soon, which is still highly possible.
