Scandisk and Defrag problems
« on: July 25, 2010, 02:07:29 PM »
When I try to run Defrag or Scandisk I get an error message saying, “Scandisk (or Defrag) could not continue because computer does not have enough available memory.”  No other programs are running except for IE.  OS is Win 98SE and RAM is 256MB.

Try running both in safemode...
To enter safemode tap F8 repeatedly at power up and before you see the Windows splash screen...

You could always Scandisk in DOS. Just keep the Ctrl keys pressed while its booting up. When you see the boot menu just select 5. Command Prompt Only. At the C:\ prompt just type Scandisk ans let it do a full drive scan, at least you will have something to look at while its doing it which is more that it shows in Windows.   ;)

How big is your hard drive and how much free space does it have?
