    RJ45 Direct connect to router.
    « on: September 26, 2010, 07:45:29 AM »
    Hi again,

Real quick, I have a tower and I am trying to connect it to a Optimum online router using an rj45 cable.
It is a  Dell tower with windows xp.

I have tried every option possible and no matter what I do it does not get a signal. Should'nt this be plug and play?

    Thanks in advance,
    MP.

It is onboard not a nic and yes it is enabled and the com port is also enabled.

Whether onboard or not, it's still a Network Interface Controller (NIC).
Don't care about COM port (RS-232 port), it's not needed.
        Explain how you "enabled" NIC.
Download the NIC drivers from www.support.dell

I realised that after I responded, a nic is a nic. lol
It was already enabled I had nothing to do.
It did tell me it was functioning properly I disabled it and enabled it again anyway.
No, I did not try to bypass the router and direct connect to many (4) laptops here using the wireless.
It crossed my mind but the old tower did work using the same exact equiptment and when I unplug the 45
the amber light goes out so I know it sees the connection just not speaking the same lingo.

Can you explain what this means?  Everything you have stated, so far, says you have a connection.
Open command prompt, and type the following, then press Enter
            ping www.google.com
            For a more complete test:
            tracert www.google.com
            copy & paste results here

In other words when it asks you to create a new connection I tried every possible option.
I think there were three so I tried each one, rebooted, turned the router on and off.
I tried access the internet using yahoo, desk top icons etc etc.

Where the 45 plugs into teh nic there is one green light and one amber light.

You didn't say what Windows version, for WinXP-Pro:
              Control Panel---Network Connections---Local Area Connection
There should only be one active LAN
Click on Properties, should say Connect using Intel (R) Pro 100/ve Network Connection

When I go to Control panel then network connections there is no lan connection to look at. This is where I can creat a new connection which never works.

                  1.  When I go to Control panel then network connections there is no lan connection to look at.

                  1.  No LAN, No network.

Not sure if its 2 or 3.

The network connection wizard is what I have been trying. I've tried every option and none seem to work.

                      I just can't win lol.

I tried the first suggestion you gave me and it does not follow the instruction.

Instead of asking me about active x it asks me to install this on all computers?

I tried the alternate method and copied it to a flash drive, for obvious reasons, then tried it on the tower and the tower coudl not validate the code that was given me on a working computer ?

                            No double file either.
