Strange connection issue on small LAN
    « on: November 11, 2010, 04:32:47 PM »
Its a bit long winded but ill give it a go

I have small home network with a PC and Thin Client connected to a cheap switch which is also connected to a Dlink DWL-2100 Wireless AP set up as a a wireless AP\bridge to my BT Homehub

The PC connects fine to the Wireless AP, BT Homehub and the internet and always has done.

The thinclient is a cheap PC i have bought which runs a linux live distro from USB but wont connect to anything but will ping my PC

    PC IP - 192.168.1.75
    Thinclient IP - 192.168.1.80
    Wireless AP IP - 192.168.1.99
    BT Homehub IP - 192.168.1.254

I have tried various live distro's on the PC including BartPE (Windows)
Tried varios ports in thr swtch swapping them around
Tried with just the thinclient and AP (Without the PC plugged in)

So im kinda stuck now, Why can the PC connect to the internet fine but not the Thin Client, which can ping my PC but not the wireless AP????

    Any help appreciated
    Thanks
    Topher

Which model of BT Homehub?  Firmware version?
Where are you? In the UK?
Cab you use a gateway other than the BT Hoemhub?
Why do you need the D-link AP?

Not sure on the Homehub (Black one lol), Although this is working fine an as the main PC can connect fine
      Im in the UK
The gateway of the Homehub is 192.168.1.254
I use the Wireless AP because I managed to get a hold for free and my PC which dosnt have a wireless card, And is now suitable as there are two PC's to connect to the wireless, both without wireless

All models of the Home Hub have at least two Ethernet ports and one USB port.  I believe. So I don not quite understand you configuration. The wireless should not  be used if you can not run two cables from the Home Hub to the PCs.
Also, using an AP as a client is not easy. I am not even sure if you can do that, but it seems that you did get it to work somehow.

Also, why don't you let the Home Hub assign all the local IPs ? The .254  would indicate that it is a DHCP thing. Did you set up automatic DHCP?

Most residential gateways would assign the local IPs this way:
      192.159.1.1
      192.159.1.2
      192.159.1.3
      192.159.1.4
... and so on up to maybe 50 as the last in the group. Not if that is how the Host Hub works, then both you PCs are out of the range of the Host Hub.

I have to user the wireless (Instead of wired ports) as my PC is quite far away from the router

The homehub uses DHCP as my housemates also use the wireless but ive checked the IP ranges and all the IP address im using are within the correct range

OK, I don't have documentation for that router. I was guessing based on personal experience.
So you did not assign the IPs yourself?
Can you provide a diagram of how things con connected?
Have you ever got internet to work on the Linux machine?

Wireless USB adapters are very cheap, But some do not work with Linux.

I have never used a D-Link device as a client. Bat maybe it is possible.

Can you borrow a wireless card from a friend?
Or do a Google on Cheap Wireless Cards for Linux
Here on this side of the pond we can buy them under $15.
I am thinking that the DLink AP is hard to use and may be the problem. Did you verify that it works with the other PC?
