Thinkpoint malware attack 11/12/10

My son's computer was attacked by Thinkpoint malware. I have done the following to try to remove it. I got this info from another web site and have also executed the procedures documented in "Read this before requesting malware removal help"

Deleted file hotfix.exe from c:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data

I also saw two more files, install and completescan, in that directory that had a date of 11/12/2010 on them, so I renamed them.

• Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) and paste (Edit->Paste) the contents of these files, one at a time

Thanks for getting back to me.

I downloaded OTL.exe to a temp folder. When I tried to run it I got a message stating that it had to be run from the desktop or some other suitable place. I copied the executable to my Desktop folder and ran it from there. I got the message "access violation at address 0040295B in OTL.exe. Read of address 001E2000.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your help.

I had copied it to the desktop and run it from there. Do I have to download it directly to the desktop? Also, I did not mention that I had copied the custom script into the area for entering custom scripts and running them.
