computer so slooooooow

hi..my pc is running really slow and 90% of the time i cant open any programs coz they stop responding..wat can i do to help this?

i have 74 gb of space on it so it cant be the hard drive?

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

well it was sitting in an office on a building site and it didnt stay too clean and one of the usb ports on the front looks like it was attacked with a screwdriver and it shorts out and switches off the pc if something is plugged into it..but i have nothing plugged into that and i cleaned it out well

And did it work recently or has it been like this since you got it?

it does work..i didnt have it while it was in the office it was given to me after that..it works fine except that its so slow..as though the hard drive is almost full
