You may have video chip failing.
How old is your laptop?..
I agree, it's still under warranty.  Contact Acer immediately.
He said:  "It is a Acer Aspire 5740G bought back in Feb this year. The graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470."

Hi Broni

The laptop is only 10 months old. I have given up on it - going to take it in on warranty claim as Computer Commando says. I think my time is better spent over Christmas installing my new hard disks on my gaming machine in raid mirrored. (I've never done a raid before so it'll be a new experience.)
