Play .swf files in Firefox?
« on: December 19, 2010, 10:43:30 AM »
It seems like I can't play .swf files in firefox, it just re-download the file.

The .swf file is working, I got the latest flash player, I have restored all the options it will do with files (like open/download  file etc) I have the latest updates on the Win7 OS, CC+ 2005/2008, DirectX 11/10/9>.

I think I didn't forget anything now.

Then, you need a standalone Flash Player, like this one: http://www.wimpyplayer.com/products/wimpy_standalone_flv_player.html

You can always download a freestanding player (ie, VLC, GOM, etc)

It was working with Internet explorer, but I got sick of all those pop-ups who opens randomly with it, so I removed it.

Can't you force it to start? You can't tell Firefox to run the .swf file in Flash?

It all did happen when I got Win7, I also isn't able to watch .gif (moving picture) in anyway if I don't get a 3'rd party program.

No one good at .swf files?

But what do you guys have if you go Tools=>Options=>Programs then find .swf files? is it that you just run it in flash or should it even exist there?

it downloaded for me as well; I had to "open containing folder" on the download and then rightclick the swf and choose Open With->Adobe Flash player to get it working (mostly because winamp has decided to somehow steal the swf association and it crashes when it tries to play SWFs, and I am so far to lazy to fix the association).

I just dragged and dropped it into a Firefox window and it worked just fine.  Same goes for IE.  To be perfectly honest, I'm not quite sure what the problem might be.

Isn't that like the same thing if you just double click on it?

I don't know. It either was part of what was installed with the flash player itself or is a component of Flash CS4. I believe the term adobe uses to refer to them is a "projector"; you can get the latest version on this page, or just download the current version here.

One has to bear in mind that "Adobe Flash" is a commercial product you must pay for; Adobe Flash Player is the product you get for free that allows you to view the content created in Flash; Generally, the Flash Player comes as a plugin or add-on for the browser.

Making things even more confusing is Shockwave; Shockwave came first and w as basically just a way to play sounds and animation on a page, and the they were created with Macromedia Director (another commercial product) so Macromedia Shockwave was the plugin for netscape and IE that allowed you to view those sounds and animation; when Flash was first introduced it was called "Shockwave flash" for a few versions before being simply called "flash" but the default publishing format, SWF, still stands for "Shockwave Flash".

When you save a SWF file locally, you can open it in a browser just fine; as long as the browser has the flash plugin/addon installed. Or, you can just use the standalone projector.

Isn't that like the same thing if you just double click on it?

As long as the file is associated with your browser, yes.

Right click on the file and go to Properties.  There should be a line that says Type of file: Shockwave Flash Object.  Beneath that is Opens with: with a program name listed to the right.  What program is listed next to Opens with?

Thank BC_Programmer for the information on the .swf file.

Did you check the settings in Tools > Options > Applications ?

See "Reset Download Actions": http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions

If you would have read the post you would know that I already tried that.

Right click on the file and go to Properties.  There should be a line that says Type of file: Shockwave Flash Object.  Beneath that is Opens with: with a program name listed to the right.  What program is listed next to Opens with?

I get;

Type of file: SWF File (.swf)
Opens with: Firefox

If I change it I could find in the recommended programs, Adobe Flash Player, Firefox, Java(TM) platform binary and Internet explorer, but I'm sure I did uninstall that...

I don't think I fully understand your question.  My browser doesn't say anything specific about the file...

But I thought I would point out that I just noticed that earlier, you mentioned something about popups.  I don't receive any popups when playing the file, so you could possibly have an infection that may or not may be related to this issue.  If you haven't already done so, I would suggest heading over to our malware section for some assistance.

Virus? I don't think so, no strange Processes, services or startup program I don't know.

But the pop-up I think (If I get the question right) It's so I can chose if I want to Save or open the file. But you can't start it manual, you can't tell flash to run it, no program wants to run it, So...  I will never be able to play a .swf file will I?

Like Allan said a bit back, the file may just be damaged. Try another one, like a YouTube video.

Ok, after sometime I got it;

Open your Firefox profile and find mimeTypes.rdf
Open the mimeTypes.rdf and find the .swf line
Delete the .swf line, save and exit
Set mimeTypes.rdf as Read-only

And now I can play .swf files.
