HELP! microphone not responding

So, are the Mute boxes un-checked now? 

You did not answer this.  At least, the Mic Volume control should not be muted.  But, for troubleshooting purposes, I'd un-mute everything.

yup, unmuted everything, played around with the advance settings also, only the mic booster as i cannot set the treble and bass (they're greyed out)

Darn i was sure we saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I note that you have "microphone boost" checked on mic advanced control window". Have you tried unchecking that? Is there anywhere in the settings something that says "restore defaults"? Since you can (it appears) readily access the software for the "realtech" audio yes you could delete it and see if having only HDMI audio changes anything. I also notice now that "balance" on recording control is muted--have you unmuted that? Seems like i am inventing some new words here according to the CH spell checker. truenorth

nope, no restore default settings.

i played around with the ATI and REALTEK drivers. uninstalling the REALTEK drivers caused my sound to not function at all, whereas uninstalling the ATI drivers had no change to my sound system.

are there any programs out there which i can use to even troubleshoot the problem or detect my mic?

Geek, Yes that is exactly the location I was referring to in my personal reference to the issue with external source recording (except in my case it needed the "line in" to be checked). However i don't see that function available in the O/P's displayed window of recording control. truenorth

Do not recommend that you play around in the registry unless you have a lot of knowledge and experience there. Bad moves could make your sound issues seem minute if the registry gets fouled up. Besides given your uninstall/reinstall of your sound card software i sincerely doubt that the problem is in the registry. I don't recall your mentioning whether your sound card was an on-board or standalone card. Also whether you have considered/tried to borrow another sound card to temporarily install to see the effect. truenorth

Does the mic have its own on/off switch?  Have you checked this?   I know you tried your mic on another computer and it worked.  But, if it has an on/off switch, you might have accidentally changed the switch.
